## Lake Vegoritida — why it's a hidden gem

## Hidden gems near the lake (drive time from the apartments)
- Arnissa, the lake village (~10 min): The largest village on the shore: a lakeside promenade, tavernas serving lake fish and a small harbour of fishing boats. Its old name, Ostrovo, was also the lake's historic name.
- Agios Panteleimonas and the lakeside monastery (~15 min): On the south-west shore, on the Florina side. The Monastery of Agios Panteleimon and Agia Evvouli carries on an older monastic community on the shore that was lost beneath the lake's waters.
- Lake Petron and ancient Petres (~25 min): On a hill above Lake Petron stands a Hellenistic town most likely founded by Philip II, father of Alexander the Great. Excavations have run since 1982; finds are on show in the Archaeological Museum of Florina.
- Lakes Zazari and Cheimaditida (~35 min): Two small, reed-fringed lakes protected in the Natura 2000 network. More than 150 bird species have been recorded around Cheimaditida — herons, ducks and birds of prey.
- Amyntaio wine country (~25 min): Greece's coolest wine-growing zone, with Xinomavro on sandy soils where old, ungrafted vines still survive. PDO Amyntaio is the only Greek appellation for still and sparkling rosé.
- Agios Athanasios (~30 min): A stone mountain village on the road to Kaimaktsalan, at around 1,200 m, with fireplaces, tavernas and views down over the lake. The area's winter base.
- Kaimaktsalan (Mount Voras) (~40 min): Greece's highest ski centre, from about 2,050 to 2,480 m. In summer you can hike towards the summit (≈2,520 m) on the border, where a small memorial chapel recalls the 1916 battle of the First World War.
- Pozar thermal baths (~33 min): Hot-spring water at around 37°C all year, in outdoor pools beside a river and small waterfalls, inside a gorge.
- Edessa: waterfalls and Varosi (~25 min): Karanos, falling about 70 metres, is one of Greece's tallest waterfalls — and you can walk into the cave behind the water. Next to it are the old Varosi quarter and the Open-Air Water Museum.
- Nymfaio and the bear sanctuary (~50 min): One of Greece's most beautiful stone villages, at 1,350 m. Just outside it, Arcturos cares for brown bears rescued from captivity; its wolves live nearby at Agrapidia.
- Florina (~45 min): A quiet riverside town with neoclassical houses, home of the famous red Florina peppers (PDO). Its Archaeological Museum holds the finds from ancient Petres.
- Prespa Lakes (~1 h 45): The fishing village of Psarades, the islet of Agios Achillios with its floating footbridge, and large colonies of Dalmatian and great white pelicans. Local speciality: Prespa giant beans (PGI).
